While studying at the GIA, Akaila crafted a piece with large opals that represented “a feminine solar system”. After seeing the first piece, many of her teachers were impressed, but told her that she could never create a collection with opals because they would be impossible to source. Luckily, Akaila is not one to shy from a challenge. She set her sights on sourcing large pink and Ethiopian opals and, ultimately, Planet Pink was born.
