Editor's Note

This Johanna Ortiz mochila tote is handmade by the Kankuamo people, a Colombian indigenous tribe settled on the southern slopes of Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, the tallest coastal mountain in thw world. The Kankuamo's laws are bind by nature and energy and they consider their mountain sacred, like other neighboring tribes on the land, the Kogui, Wiwa, Arhuacos. The unusual striped mochilas are carefully knitted from raw and colored straw (figue) by the women in the tribes and their unique craftsmanship allows every piece to tell a differnet story. It is through mochilas that Kankuamos have managed to preserve their identity and pass it on from generation to generation along with the symbolism adjacent to the art: for them, mochilas are a symbol of fertility and carry a strong sense of femininity.
