Septem Sculpture
The Septem Sculpture by Marcela Cure is a celebratory acknowledgment of pride and multidimensionality in womanhood. Composed of seven irregular, upward-reaching, hand-sculpted and hand-cast legs in a resin and stone composite, the piece juxtaposes raw, seemingly immutable materiality with notions of flexibility, freedom, movement, solidarity, and balance.
The meditative process of sculpting and casting each individual leg honors traits and scars alike, reinforcing the idea of strength in numbers by making each element more visible and meaningful as part of the whole. With a metaphorical sense of functionality, the sculpture also serves as a supportive side table, creating an evocative study of what it means to be a woman today and the shared, almost encrypted pride that accompanies that experience.
The number seven, reflected in the seven individual legs, alludes to the burdening expectations of “wholeness” and “perfection” often placed on women, while simultaneously suggesting repetition and renewal—much like the rhythm of the seven-day calendar week.
