10 Things to Try for Fall (and Fashion Month)

Whether you’re headed to the runway shows or are in need of a fall refresh, our Fashion Director Lisa Aiken weighs in on the 10 things worth investing in for the season.

1.     The Versatile Slip
The slip dress is the one thing that should always go in your suitcase. You can wear it layered for day with a cool pair of boots, but it works equally as well if you have to go to something at night. Plus, it takes up zero space when traveling.

2.     The Cult Bags
With every fashion month comes a new crop of must-have handbags that we're guaranteed to see everywhere on the street. I will be packing the new cult favorites: Staud’s Moon, Wandler’s Georgia and Bottega Veneta’s Intrecciato (as well as my Cloud clutch from the brand).

3.     Bottega Veneta Shoes
Daniel Lee is a genius: I am obsessed with this entire collection—they're all I want to wear. I'll be packing as many pairs as I can get my hands on.

4.     The Trench Coat
Fashion Month always starts out in the balmiest of temperatures, but it starts to get a bit chilly by the time you get to Paris in October. A great trench will see you through everything.

5.     Tailoring
Tailoring is the one trend that is not going anywhere. I always turn to a pantsuit when I'm at the end of Fashion Month, or on the days when I can’t think to put anything together. It offers a statement look without any effort whatsoever.

6.     Leather
Slick and cool, it’s my version of power dressing. When I put on something leather, I always feel chic and polished.

7.     Bold Shoulders

If you've lived through the ‘80s, you may not wish to relive this trend—but don't knock it just yet: second time around, it's more feminine and easier to master. Tip: buy a good belt and tightly cinch everything at the waist.

8.     The Clash
The art of the unexpected print clash can be tricky, but if you pick a floral or a leopard as your base, most things go. A few pointers: a darker-based print is easier to work with and remember, it’s not necessarily about loud prints, it’s about interesting, decorative prints.

9.     The Draped Silhouette
I go to Europe for three weeks at a time and I can’t pack three weeks’ worth of coats, so a double-layered knit is a true lifesaver for me. Whether in cashmere or silk, it’s super elegant and cozy, like being wrapped in a blanket.

10.     Utilitarian Boots
The thing with these boots is that they add just the right amount of edge to girly pieces, like a floral skirt or mini dress. And, it’s a justifiable purchase because they’re super practical.
