THE Q&A
Proportions and Patchwork
with JW Anderson
JW Anderson Spring ‘20 was more innovative, carefully crafted genius from the British designer. Hybridized loafer-mules, gorgeous tailored tuxedo pants, and psychedelic paisley tasseled shirting: these pieces stopped us in our tracks.

Now the collection is available for preorder on Moda. And no place else.

For Spring / Summer 2020, what goals did you set and what were the outcomes?

I think after the strength of our women’s Fall ’19 collection we wanted to take some of the same themes and translate it into men’s and resort. We played with proportions again and a bit of suiting with the tuxedo pieces. Knits were also a big theme. I liked the idea of something that felt crafted.

What appeals to you about the Moda model of pre-order almost immediately after runway shows?

I think nowadays people want to buy as soon as they see something. We’re in a culture of instant and Insta, and I like the idea of see-now buy-now. Pre-order is at least working in that direction.

What’s behind your penchant for patchwork?

Each collection is unique but it’s important to have recurring themes. Patchwork and asymmetric stripes are two themes I think we carry over in most seasons with JW Anderson. Patchwork in particular always feels a bit heritage to me. I like to take something that feels a bit old or that has a history and work it into a modern look.

If I may get more personal: What’s the most worn-in or even destroyed thing you still regularly wear?

Probably a pair of jeans.

What’s a personal item of clothing you buy repeatedly?

Uniqlo plain tee. I feel like I am constantly buying more. I love a basic from Uniqlo.
What’s the last concert, show, or movie that was so nice you saw it twice?

I can’t think of something I saw twice but I saw Robyn in London recently and I am obsessed. We love
Robyn.

Same. Which other musicians are you inspired by these days?

There is a
Pride playlist on Spotify with nothing but fun, dancey hits. I’d like to say I am inspired by it being June and Pride month, but, to be honest, I listen to that playlist year ‘round…
