She’s the designer whose renown lies in playful accessories moonlighting as written works. With a cult following of literary-loving fans, it was only natural for Paris-based Olympia Le-Tan to turn to Japanese storytelling for inspiration. Dubbed “Sentimental Journey,” this latest collection is an ode to Le-Tan’s beloved Tokyo locale—the Hotel Okura—which was closed for demolition earlier this year. Embellished with erotic embroideries and whimsical Hello Kitty graphics, book-shaped clutches open backwards (as if they were Japanese-language titles). Souvenir jackets incorporate coiled rope motifs—a nod to Le-Tan’s interest in kinbaku, or Japanese bondage. Given the collection’s rich Nippon thematic, it was only fitting that neon lights illuminated the runway show—and guests were served sake.
